Terms & Legal
The short version: be cool, don't do anything weird.
The honest version
Guess When Music is a hobby project. It's free, it has no ads, and it doesn't sell your data — because it barely collects any.
Here's what you should know:
What data we collect
When you create or join a game, you enter a display name. That name exists only for the duration of your session and is not stored after the game ends.
We don't require an account. We don't store email addresses. We don't track you across sessions.
We use anonymous session data (game state, player count, song results) to run the multiplayer experience in real time. This data lives in memory on our game servers and is discarded when the room closes.
We may use aggregated, anonymous analytics to understand how the game is being used (e.g. average number of players per session). No personal data is included in this.
Music & audio
Guess When Music plays 30-second song previews via the Deezer API and, optionally, Spotify (which requires a Spotify Premium account and explicit authorization by you).
All audio is streamed from Deezer or Spotify's own infrastructure. We do not host, store, or redistribute any music files.
All music rights remain with the respective rights holders. Guess When Music has no affiliation with Deezer or Spotify.
Cookies & local storage
We use browser local storage to remember an active game session if you accidentally close your tab, so you can rejoin without re-entering your name and code.
We don't use tracking cookies or third-party advertising cookies.
Availability
This is a hobby project maintained by one person in their spare time. We can't guarantee uptime, and we reserve the right to change or shut down the service at any time without notice.
If something breaks, we're sorry. Please let us know.
Liability
Guess When Music is provided as-is, with no warranties. We're not liable for anything that goes wrong — including but not limited to: wrong year guesses, lost friendships, disputed decades, or arguments about whether a song "sounds like" 1987.
Changes to these terms
If something significant changes, we'll update this page. The date below reflects the last update.
